Howard Leroy Mingus

Howard Leroy Mingus, age 76, of Murphy, NC passed away Saturday, October 4, 2014.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, NC; son of the late John Dillard and Flora Josephine Timpson Mingus. He was a self-employed logger. Howard was a member of the Boiling Springs Baptist Church. He loved to sing and was a member of the "Shape Note Singers". He was known as a jokester and enjoyed working puzzles. Howard loved his grandchildren, had a heart of gold and loved to loafer.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Jerry Mingus.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Anna Lee Rogers Mingus; two sons, Randy Mingus and wife Ronda and Jason Mingus and wife Alisha all of Murphy, NC; two daughters, Rhonda Mingus Armstrong and husband Rev. Steve Armstrong of Powder Springs, GA, and Patricia Rhodes and husband Jamie of Murphy, NC; two brothers, Charles Mingus and wife Christine of Andrews, NC and Billy Mingus and wife Caroleen of Murphy, NC; one sister, Wanda Dockery and husband Alfred of Murphy, NC; seven grandchildren and two great grandsons; and countless nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 7 PM, Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy, NC. Dr. Eddis Dockery and Rev. Steve Armstrong will officiate. A Graveside Service will be held at 11 AM, Thursday, October 9, 2014 at the Hiwassee Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mark Kephart, Jimmy Nix, Max O’Dell, Michael Mingus, Tim Kephart and Dwayne Plemmons. Honorary pallbearers will be Rex Davis, Morris Graves, Dean Hass, Mike Townson and Tom Coursey.

The family will receive friends from 4-7 PM, Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy, NC.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in memory of Howard Leroy Mingus to the Alzheimer’s Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.
