Carvel Othel Barnard

9/28/1942 - 4/15/2026

Carvel Othel Barnard, 83, of Warne, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2026. A lifelong resident of the mountains she loved, Carvel was born in Clay County to the late Frank and Olive Brooks.

Carvel dedicated 36 years of her professional life to the citizens of Clay County. Her career was a testament to her versatility and public spirit; she began her journey with the Sheriff’s Department, serving as a secretary, jailer, and dispatcher. Her leadership and deep understanding of public safety eventually led her to serve as the Clay County 911 Director, a role she held until her retirement. Additionally, she served her community with integrity as a Magistrate.

The Heart of "Nanny" - While her professional achievements were many, Carvel’s true masterpiece was her family. Known affectionately by everyone as "Nanny," she was the ultimate matriarch. She lived her life on the road, putting countless miles on her vehicle to ensure she never missed a moment. Whether she was sitting in the stands at a sporting event, traveling across the country to stay with family during military deployments, or simply showing up because she was asked, Nanny was always there. Her retirement was not a time of rest, but a season of devotion, spent traveling to ensure every child, grandchild, and great-grandchild felt her presence and support.

Carvel was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Howard Barnard; her parents; and her siblings, Jack Brooks, James (Jim) Brooks, Francis Crone, William (Bill) Brooks, and Jerry Brooks.

Her legacy of love is carried on by her children: Lynn Ledford; David Bright (Diane "Dee"); Carla Jackie Myers (Thor); and Lisa Bright. She was the proud Nanny to her grandchildren: Carly Murray, Erica Ostrom, Robert "Robbie" Bright, Colin Bright, Tyler Myers, Trevor Myers, Cayla Myers, and Madison Dillner. She also leaves behind her cherished great-grandchildren: Keagan, Daylyn, and Miles Murray; Blaine Ostrom; Carlo DeCosta; and Emrys Blouin.

Celebration of Life - In honor of Carvel’s vibrant spirit and her love for family gatherings, the family plans to hold a Celebration of Life during the Summer of 2026. Details regarding the date and location will be shared with friends and loved ones as the season approaches.

The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the dedicated staff and nurses at the Clay County Care Center and Chatuge Regional Nursing Home. Your kindness provided more than just medical care; you welcomed "Nanny" into your hearts and truly treated her like one of your own.
