Obituary for Winfred Harding

Winfred Harding, age 88 of Murphy, NC passed away Friday, June 24, 2016 at his home.

He was born in the Culberson community to the late C. Ernest and Rhoda Ledford Harding. After graduating from Murphy High School he entered the U.S. Army and served in Korea during the Japan Campaign.

After the Army he moved to Youngstown, Ohio where he married and worked at Youngstown Sheet and Tube for 30 years. After retiring he returned to Murphy where he lived on the family farm. Winfred also worked for the Town of Murphy. Winfred's gift was music and he gave it away every time he sang including entertaining at several local nursing homes.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son, David Harding; three brothers, CJ Harding, Deuall Harding, Cecil Harding and one sister, Inez Harding Carroll who formerly resided in Lewistown, PA.

He is survived by two sons, Wayne and Joe; one daughter, Ronda; two sisters, Leona Cornwell and Irene Mundy of Murphy; his grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Also surviving is his friend and caregiver, Elaine Crowe of Murphy.

Funeral Services will be at 1 PM Thursday, June 30, 2016 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Rev. Bo Phillips will officiate. Burial will be in Shady Grove Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the V.F.W. Post #10222, Joe Miller Elkin American Legion Post #96 and D.A.V. Chapter #73 and American Legion Post #532 of Hayesville and V.F.W. Post #6812 Hayesville of which Winfred was a former member of the burial detail.

The family will receive friends from 12-1 PM, Thursday, June 30, 2016 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, c/o Lois Menasian, 6 Deweese Street,Murphy, NC 28906.
