Obituary for Robert Alvin Nichols

Robert was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late James Alvin Nichols and Betty Stone Nichols. He worked as a skilled welder throughout his career and approached life with the same dedication and determination that characterized his work. Robert had a lifelong passion for racing and motorsports. He competed in BMX bicycle racing, achieving the distinction of being ranked No. 2 in the world by JAG BMX in 1981. He also excelled in flat-track motorcycle racing, earning a National No. 79 ranking. His love for speed and competition remained a defining part of his life. He was also a devoted Ford enthusiast, with a special appreciation for Mustangs. Always ready for an adventure, Robert enjoyed spontaneous road trips and spending time on the open road riding his motorcycle. A lifelong sports fan, he faithfully supported the Atlanta Braves, Miami Dolphins, Georgia Bulldogs, and Notre Dame football teams. Above all, Robert cherished time with his family. His greatest joy was being with his loved ones, especially his grandchildren, who held a special place in his heart. He will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, competitive drive, unwavering loyalty to those he loved, and the many memories he created with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Donnell Nichols; two sons, Robert Andrew Nichols and Jacob James Nichols (Nicole) all of Murphy, NC; one daughter, Patricia "Trish" Carr (Josh) of Marietta, GA; one sister, Tanda Miles (Rodney) of Flowery Branch, GA; three grandchildren, Camden James Carr, Vincent James Nichols and baby on the way, Caroline Hazel Carr; two nephews, Tylar Miles (Natalie) and Jamie Miles (Katie); one uncle, Robert Lynn Nichols and one aunt, Shirley Carter.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 am, Saturday, June 20, 2026 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Rev. Calvin Murphy will officiate. The burial will be in the Macedonia Cemetery (Old Culberson Road). Pallbearers will be Andrew and Jacob Nichols, Josh Carr, Tylar and Jamie Miles, and Ryan Matteson.

The family will receive friends from 10 am to 11 am, Saturday, June 20. 2026 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home.
