Obituary for Coy Kate Hunsucker

Coy Kate Hunsucker, age 92, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, November 28, 2025. Coy was born September 23, 1933 to Thomas “Luke” Hunsucker and Cornecie “Necie” Worley Hunsucker in Murphy, North Carolina.

After graduation from Murphy High School, she attended Berea College in Kentucky and went on to receive her master's in library science from Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio. Coy worked in the downtown library in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she retired as the head of the Exceptional Children’s division. She was an active member of her church in Cincinnati and served as a Sunday School teacher for many years in the church’s mission as well as singing in the church choir. Following her retirement in 2000, she returned to Murphy and was an active member of Grape Creek Baptist Church. During her working years she enjoyed traveling to visit friends and family, library conventions, and an incredible trip to the Holy Land. In retirement, Coy loved gardening and was well versed in the scientific names of many flowers and plants. She is particularly remembered by all her nieces and nephews for being a captivating storyteller like none other. Her visits to Murphy were always highly anticipated by all in the family. Coy’s storytelling was not only appreciated by her family, but by all the children she worked with throughout her life.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her older brothers; Elmer Hunsucker and Homer Hunsucker both of Murphy, and Clifford Hunsucker of Oakridge, Oregon, and younger sister, Clara Mae Carroll of Murphy. She is survived by one brother, Clyde Hunsucker of Murphy, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 3, 2025 from 12 -1 pm, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy with the funeral following in the Chapel at 1pm. Burial will be in the Grape Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Pastor Steve West will be officiating. Honorary pallbearers are Floyd Worley and Paul Worley. Pallbearers will be Randy Starnes, Josh Henri, Mike Hunsucker, Tom Kephart, Aaron Kephart, and Mark Johnson.
