12/22/1952 - 06/19/2026
Dr. William Reed Dyer ("Doc" or "Bill"), age 73 of Murphy, NC passed away Friday, June 19, 2026 surrounded by the love of his family.
He was born December 22, 1952 to the late Dr. George and Dorothy "Pat" Pittillo. Bill dedicated his life to serving others. Following in his father's footsteps, he took over the family chiropractor practice in Murphy in 1976 and faithfully cared for generations of families until his retirement in 2019.
For decades, he was a fixture on the sidelines of Murphy Bulldog athletics, serving as team doctor and caring for countless athletes. His impact extended far beyond his profession. Bill spent his life taking care of people. He showed up when he was needed. Bill gave when he had little left to give. He carried burdens that were not his own and offered comfort when others were hurting. His hands healed, his words encouraged, and his heart never seemed to run out of room for the people he loved. If someone needed him, he was there. That was simply who he was.
He will be remembered as a man of strength, integrity, generosity, and quiet service. Bill lived a life defined not by what he accumulated, but by what he gave away. His legacy can be found in the lives he touched, the people he helped, and the family he loved so deeply.
Bill was a member of the Murphy First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed serving as head usher for many years. Bill also served on the Murphy Town Council for many years.
One of the greatest gifts of his final days was being surrounded by his wife and daughters, who remained by his side around the clock, loving him, caring for him, talking to him, holding his hand, and reminding him how deeply he was loved.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one nephew, Dustin Hughes, and other loved ones who surely welcomed him home.
Bill is survived by his wife, Laura "Cissy" Bristol Dyer; daughters, Jennifer Pitman (Travise), Melanie Davenport (Nathan) and Hope Dyer; grandchildren, Patrick Allen (Jaden), Ty Pitman (Cadee), Georjah Allen, John Allen, Tate Pitman, Peyton Dyer Pitman and Maddox Davenport; mother of his children, Phyllis Hughes; and many extended family members, friends, former patients, athletes and community members who lives are better because they knew him.
While his family grieves his absence, they find comfort in knowing that his work here is complete. The same hands that spent a lifetime caring for others are finally at rest.
In lieu of flowers, Bill's family has requested that you make donations to the First United Methodist Church, PO Box 86, Murphy, NC 28906.
