Obituary for Jimmy Wade Baker

09/19/1945 - 05/04/2025

Jimmy Wade Baker, age 79, of Murphy, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, May 4, 2025. He was the son of the late Lloyd Baker, Sr. and Ruth Morgan Baker.

Jimmy proudly served in the United States Army and was deeply devoted to honoring fellow veterans—always ready with a handshake, a warm welcome home, and a shared sense of service. He retired from General Motors after a long career as an automobile inspector, where his eye for detail and dedication earned the respect of his peers.

In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by his brothers, Lloyd Baker Jr. and infant William Baker, as well as his sister, Ora Belle Baker.

He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Sallie Coleman Baker; his cherished daughter, Michelle Baker (Orlando Oliver); his brother, Allen Baker (Beth); sister, Wanda Hendry (Sid); and beloved granddaughter, Jenniffer Medrano (Mark).

Jimmy took great pride in his Cherokee heritage and enjoyed learning about his ancestry. A lifelong fan of classic cars, he loved attending local car shows and sharing that passion with others. He also found joy in listening to the timeless tunes of the 1960s and ’70s—the golden oldies that brought back fond memories.

At Jimmy’s request, a committal service will be held at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, North Carolina, on Friday, May 9th at 2:00 PM, with interment to follow. A military gun salute will be held in his honor on Thursday, May 8th at 6:00 PM at Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy. Pallbearers will be Randy Brown, Colby Brown, Isaac Brown and Mark Castillo. Honorary pallbearers will be Edward Baker, Ron Coleman, and Terry Coleman.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to American Cancer Society (Donate.cancer.org) or Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (vvmf.org).

Jimmy will be remembered for his pride in his roots, his love for family, and his respect for service.
