Obituary for JC McCoy

JC "Jake" McCoy, age 88 of Murphy, NC passed away Saturday, February 11, 2023.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, NC and the son of the late John and Dora Hughes McCoy. JC was a US Army veteran; he served in the Korean War. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and horseback riding. JC enjoyed coaching baseball and softball with his kids. He enjoyed going to flea markets and collecting items. JC was involved with Martins Creek Community Center. He enjoyed listening to the MHS bulldog games every Friday night. JC loved watching the Atlanta Braves. He was a member of the American Legion Post #96 and New Martins Creek Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Darlene Hemphill; and brothers, Clyde "Bill", Lloyd, Richard and Tim McCoy; and one sister, Frances Johnson.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Alice Chastain McCoy; three sons, Dennis McCoy (Trisha), Johnny McCoy and Jan McCoy (Tamara); one son-in-law, David Hemphill; three sisters, Ruby Queen, Shirley Simond (Jimmy) and Grace McGilvery; 11 grandchildren, Jason McCoy (Calon), Sam McCoy (Sami), LaBreeska McCoy, Rajun McCoy (Thomas Lodwick), Cody McCoy Hanley, Hope McCoy, Travis Hemphill (Kayla), Lacey Roth (Jason), Aiden Williams (Tristan), Gabe McCoy and Neena McCoy; eight great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 pm, Friday, February 17, 2023 at the New Martins Creek Baptist Church. Rev. Aud Brown and Rev. Hoyt Brown will officiate. Music will be provided Paul Ray Morgan. Graveside services will be conducted by Rev. Chris Matheson in the church cemetery with military graveside rites by the American Legion Post #96, Murphy, American Legion Post 532 Hayesville, VFW Post 6812, Hayesville and the Marine Corp League, Marble.. Pallbearers willl be Jason McCoy, Travis Hemphill, Jake McCoy, Bradley McCoy, Sam McCoy and Gabe McCoy. Honorary pallbearers will be Liam Hanley, Thomas Lodwick, David Hemphill and Jeff Cook.

The family will receive friends from 11 am to 1 pm, Friday, February 17, 2023 at the New Martins Creek Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Legion Post #96, PO Box 712, Murphy, NC 28906.
