Obituary for Doris Smart Moore

09/26/1926 - 06/10/2016

Doris Smart Moore, 89, of Hayesville passed away Friday June 10, 2016 at her residence.

Doris was born at home on September 26, 1926 in Gastonia, NC. She was the second oldest of 7 children born to John Smart, Sr. & Ida Belle Barnard Smart. Since childhood, she grew up and lived her life close to family in Clay County.

She graduated from Hayesville High School and Western Carolina Teachers College. She taught typing and shorthand at Hayesville High School as her first job. She retired in 1986 after a combined 40 year career with the NC Cooperative Extension Service and the USDA Farmers Home Administration. She loved her job and the many friends she made while serving the public. She was a lifelong member of Oak Forest Methodist Church and a Sunday school teacher to children that she loved very much.

Being an excellent seamstress, she sewed for her daughter, family, and friends making everything from clothes to costumes and curtains. As a hobby, she also put many years of time and love into quilting and crocheting just the perfect gift for others. Cooking for family was a joy, as many delicious meals have been served from her table.

Family meant everything as she loved and cared about each and every one in her large extended family.

Her life was spent cherishing time and making memories with all her close and loving family.

More than anything she loved being a grandmother to her three grandsons with her unconditional love.

She was filled with joy and pride as they grew, started their own families, and blessed her with 3 precious great-grandchildren.

She was a wonderful and priceless mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, wife, daughter, sister, and aunt.

She will be remembered for her Christian life, her always sweet and cheerful personality, always having a smile, the love of laughter, never complaining, being a good listener, and being “that soft place to fall” for everyone.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years Thomas “Willis” Moore; two beloved brothers, James Smart and John Smart, Jr., Sisters-in-law: Dolly Martin Smart, Mary Dills Smart, and Frankie Moore Byers, Brothers-in-law: Norman Penland, Gene Bryant, Jewel Barrett, Jack H.
