Obituary for Larry Joel Coleman

Larry Joel Coleman passed away on February 10, 2024 at the age of 87.

His roots ran deep in Clay County. Larry was born in downtown Hayesville on March 3, 1936. He was the only child of Wilma Viola Duckett and Saint Elmo Coleman. Larry's father was killed when he was only 3 years old in a car accident. His mother remarried later and then Larry was raised by Paul Kilpatrick. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to deer hunt, fish and raise a garden. Larry retired from General Motors after 33 years in Doraville, Georgia and was a member of the Gwinnett County Sportsmen Club. He is a United States Army veteran who had served in Alaska and received several awards while in the Army which includes National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Expert Markmanship Badge.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Susan Lenore Johnston Coleman.

Larry is survived by his son, Mark Coleman (Lori); two daughters, Wilma Sue West (Kenny) and Lenore Gee (Tommy); a stepbrother, Gerald Kilpatrick; six grandchildren, Travis Coleman (Michelle), Leeann Coleman, Emily Mull (Shane), Phillip West (Stephanie), Cora Coleman and Liam Coleman; and seven great grandchildren, Madison Coleman, Piper Coleman, Brycen Coleman, Branson Mull, Isaac Mull, Henry West and Ben West.

A funeral service will be held at 2pm on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Hayesville. Rev. Darryl Rose and Pastor Phil Goble, Jr will officiate. Burial will be in First United Methodist Church Cemetery in Hayesville with military graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post #96, Murphy, American Legion Post 532 Hayesville, VFW Post 6812, Hayesville and the Marine Corp League, Marble. Pallbearers will be Shane Mull, Travis Coleman, Benny Kimsey, Donald Kimsey, Chuck Walker and Phillip West.

The family will receive friends from 1pm to 2pm on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Hayesville prior to the funeral service.
